The Apostle Paul wrote to the Hebrews about the importance of "the first principles of the oracles of God" (Hebrews 5:12). Paul also calls them "the first principles of the doctrine of Christ", and he shows their importance to believers by referring to them as "the foundation" upon which every believer must be firmly set (Hebrews 6:1-2).

 

The importance of first principles lies in their foundational nature. These particular doctrines explain and constitute both what the "gospel of the kingdom" is and what man must do to attach himself to its hope (Matthew 4:23). First principles therefore encompass the essential principles of the Gospel which must be understood, believed, and baptized into for one to become a part of "Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" of eternal life (Galatians 3:26-29, Mark 16:16).

But what are these doctrines? Which teachings are essential, and which are not? These questions are what the Christadelphian Statement of Faith was created to answer. The Statement of Faith defines what these basic doctrines are and summarizes them in one concise document. While these doctrines are concisely listed, the other important question is which needs answering is, Why are these specific doctrines essential? What makes these principles so important that they represent "the foundation" of the Gospel message? 

 

We've started the Unamended Christadelphian First Principles project to answer these very questions. The project is a podcast channel which takes each proposition one by one, explaining it from Scripture and show why each doctrine is essential. Every doctrine in the Statement of Faith is explained in clear, simple, and, most importantly, Scriptural terms.​
